Suez Canal suspends 15% rebate for large containerships

From 7 April 2026 the Suez Canal Authority suspended the 15% rebate for containerships of 130,000 Suez Canal Net Tonnage or more, which it had offered since May 2025 to win back liner services.

Issued 2 Apr 2026 by Suez Canal Authority (SCA), Transit Department · Written 26 Oct 2026 · How we check

Effective
7 April 2026
Affects
Containerships of 130,000 SCNT or above, laden or ballast, northbound or southbound

What changed

  • The SCA suspended Circular No. 3/2025 (13 May 2025) and its renewal, Periodical No. 29/2025 (17 November 2025).
  • Those granted a 15% rebate to laden or ballast containerships of 130,000 SCNT or more, in either direction.
  • The suspension applies from 7 April 2026. The SCA gave no end date.

Who is affected

  • Operators of large container vessels (130,000 SCNT and above) using, or planning to return to, the Suez route.
  • Since 15 July 2026, the same vessels also pay the new 12% containership surcharge on total dues (Circular 2/2026).

What to do

  • Remove the 15% rebate from Suez cost estimates for large containerships.
  • Check whether a route-based containership rebate still applies to your trade. Several were renewed to 31 December 2026, for example East Coast Americas and US Gulf to South and South East Asia (Periodical 13/2026).
  • Confirm the final dues with your agent before the transit.
