Kiel Canal Transit Procedures & Requirements

The Kiel Canal (German: *Nord-Ostsee-Kanal*) is the busy shortcut between the North Sea and the Baltic, saving the long passage around the Skagerrak. Transit is governed by German waterway regulations administered by the Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV / WSA Kiel-Holtenau), and most commercial vessels arrange passage through a Kiel Canal agent.

Traffic groups

Every vessel using the Kiel Canal is sorted into one of six traffic groups (1–6) based mainly on its dimensions. The traffic group determines the rules that apply to your vessel — including pilotage, canal helmsman, tug assistance, and where and when you may pass oncoming traffic.

Transit segments carry passage numbers (6, 7, or 8) reflecting their physical width. Two ships may pass each other on a segment only if the sum of their traffic group numbers does not exceed that segment's passage number — the core rule that governs the Canal's one-way and two-way sections.

Vessel size limits

Maximum dimensions for transit are:

Larger combinations of length, beam, and draft move a vessel into higher traffic groups with stricter handling requirements.

Pilotage and canal helmsman

The Kiel Canal has graduated pilotage and steering requirements tied to vessel size:

Your agent confirms which of these apply to your vessel and orders pilots, helmsmen, and tugs as needed so they're available when you reach the locks at Brunsbüttel or Kiel-Holtenau.

How a transit works in practice

1. Pre-registration / notification of the vessel and its particulars ahead of arrival.

2. Traffic-group classification based on dimensions.

3. Ordering pilotage, canal helmsman, and tugs as required by the traffic group.

4. Lock scheduling at Brunsbüttel (North Sea end) or Kiel-Holtenau (Baltic end).

5. Transit under the passing rules, at the regulated speed.

Why use a Kiel Canal agent

Between traffic-group classification, the passing-number rules, and graduated pilotage and helmsman obligations, the Kiel Canal rewards local expertise and 24/7 coordination at the locks. An agent arranges the right services in the right order and represents the vessel to the WSV authorities throughout.
